Nemasket Kayak Center expands to Tihonet Village

When Nemasket Kayak Center started offering rentals in Onset last summer, it was a huge hit right away.
Now, Nemasket owner Roy Edwards has decided to move his whole operation from Rayhnam to Wareham.
The new center at A.D. Makepeace Farms in Tihonet Village will offer rentals and guided kayaking and canoe tours starting this month.
The retail store sells everything from kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards to T-shirts and accessories.
“I’m excited,” Edwards said. “Onset was a success last year and we hope to continue that this year. This spot in Wareham is also a great spot to explore the waters and the environment.”
Edwards said A.D. Makepeace approached him at the Cranberry Festival this fall and asked if he was interested in opening up shop at Tihonet. Edwards jumped on board soon after because he felt he would have
more opportunities to expand his business at this location.
“The people at A.D. Makepeace have been great to work with,” Edwards said. “This is a fantastic opportunity.”
Edwards grew up in New Bedford and Brockton and fondly recalled vacationing in Onset and Wareham when he was a kid. He liked it so much he brought his kids and they liked it so much they brought their kids.
“This is a perfect spot,” Edwards said. “It’s such a great place to be, with a great beach that fills up and the community seems very tight knit.”
Edwards opened Nemasket Kayak Center in 2011, where he offered tours of the Taunton River. Before that, he worked for Canoe Passage Outfitters in Raynham for 15 years. He was also in the Navy for four years.
“I’ve been around water my whole life,” Edwards said. “It’s my passion. I love everything about it.”
Edwards and his staff are all certified by the American Canoe Association. They will offer tours geared toward paddlers of all ages and skills. Special topics include photography, birding, fishing, historic, and fall foliage.
He recommends taking a kayaking class for first-timers. However, the kayaks are all recreational and “very stable” so newbies don’t have to worry if they forego a lesson.
Last year Edwards said he was especially excited to bring standup paddle boarding or “SUP” to this area because it’s a hit in other parts of the country like Hawaii, California and Florida.
He will still offer standup paddle boarding in Onset only. Canoeing will be offered at the Wareham location only.
Nemasket will also allow people to rent kayaks and take them elsewhere for the day.
Edwards is also looking to hire instructors, tour guides, and waterfront personnel.
