Emmy Carrizales: Banks sophomore wins Cowapa high jump title — with little practice

Emmy Carrizales earned a spot in next week’s state championships in Eugene by winning the boys high jump title at the Cowapa League district meet.

Now for the really impressive part: For most of the season, high jump wasn’t even one of his top events.

“He longs and triples for us and he even ran the 1,500 for the first half of the season,” Banks coach Rob Frank said. “He high jumps some, but he wasn’t working too much on that.

“In practice Wednesday I said, ‘Let’s just work on the high jump a little bit before the district meet,’ so he gets out there and he makes 5-6. So, we put it up at 5-8, and he makes that. So, we put it up at 5-10, and he makes that.

“At that point I said, ‘Ohhhh man!’ ”

Carrizales recorded a 5-8 in Yamhill, and that was enough for the victory. He and teammate Keenan Marston were the only competitors to top 5-6.

Now that Carrizales is actually focusing on the event, Frank can only imagine how high the sophomore might climb.

“He went from jumping 5-feet to 5-8 in about a week and a half,” Frank said. “I think he can go 6-feet. He’s got great springs.”
