How can I start Meditating?
Life today is non-stop for those in the West. Why, when we have such a ‘convenience’ culture, can’t we take the time to enjoy it? It seems like we are all racing to get on with something, whether it’s work, home or kids.
In this, we need to take wellness instruction from the meditation practices of the East. We all have two directions we can go in – internal and external. If your life is built on one alone, it is impossible to achieve balance and overall wellbeing. Meditation is no longer the strange, mystic practice it once seemed, but a practical way to wellbeing. Nowadays, there are multiple medical proofs of this complementary system of health.
Meditation is a practice of consciously relaxing the body and mind, while staying aware. When you meditate, you do not ‘do’ anything. It’s probably the only thing we find difficult, this ‘not-doing’! For this reason, you might find it difficult to start; however, the following suggestions will make it much easier for you:
Meditate in the morning. Your mind will be clear at this time, and you will be able to set a calm tone for the rest of the day.
Meditate in nature. You will find an extra sense of calm in the surroundings, and soak up extra energy from the sun!
Try walking meditation. Combine awareness with simple movement, concentrating on the soles of your feet as they hit the floor.
Do yoga before meditating. The ancient purpose of yoga was to prepare the body for meditation! If you stretch before meditating, your sitting will be much more comfortable.
