COOMANDOOK Area School student Georgia Seidel will compete for Australia in the Junior World Rowing Championships in Germany.

The Year 12 student and past Women’s Double Scull champion said she was looking forward to competing in the event in Hamburg in August with doubles partner Bridget Badenoch of the Adelaide University Boat Club.

“I’m really focused on Hamburg at the moment, but when I get back I’m going to concentrate on fine tuning my skills so that hopefully I get selected for the Australian junior team again this year,” she said.

“That way I can continue to work towards my biggest goal of competing in the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 2018.”

A great patriot for her town and district, Georgia said she was saddened to hear that the Coonalpyn and District Lions Club closed, after she had received financial help from it in the past.

“I was honoured to be invited to their last meeting,” Georgia said.

“It’s a real shame to see another support group from our small community leave – but it was really good to hear all about the impressive things they have done over the past 40 years.

“The Lions have helped me so much, they donated money to help me with the costs of attending the SIRR nationals and also the junior selection trials in Penrith this year.”

“The SIRR is a big show, it attracts thousands of domestic Australian rowers and hundreds of international athletes.

“In all, there’s 110 events over the seven day competition making the regatta the largest rowing championship in Australia.

“Last year’s regatta was the biggest held since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.”

Born in Murray Bridge in 1997, Georgia is currently finishing her secondary schooling and has been rowing for the Murray Bridge Rowing Club for three years.

Over the past 12 months Georgia has won various events, including the Youth Women’s Single Scull State Championship, the U19 Women’s Single Scull State Championship, the U19 Women’s Double State Championship with Chelsea Parker-Menzies of the Murray Bridge Rowing Club and the Open Schoolgirl Single Scull State Championship.
