Are You Drinking Enough Water for your Wellness?
Water is a huge part of you. Two-thirds of your body weight is made up of water, and you lose 2.5 litres of this daily. To reduce the wellness risk of dehydration, you need to drink enough water to make up for this loss. You get roughly 1 litre of the water you need from your diet but to bring up the rest of the balance, it’s recommended that you drink around 1.2 litres per day which is the equivalent of 8 x 150ml glasses.
You need enough water so your body can function properly. How much you need varies depending on who you are. Your levels of physical activity, your temperature and your size are all factors that determine how much water you need to look out for your wellbeing. If you aren’t getting enough water, your body becomes at risk to dehydration. You can tell if you’re dehydrated if you have headaches, experience fatigue or pass insufficient or dark-coloured urine.
Also, you need to focus on your water needs when it comes to weight loss. Following a low calorie diet can make you mistake dehydration symptoms for hunger, which makes you more likely to overeat if you are not properly hydrated. Water can also help you cut down on unhealthy snacking, as it curbs your appetite until mealtimes.
You may get bored of drinking water, and be tempted to choose sugary soft drink options. These contain a lot more calories, and Caron Leckie, a nutritionist at delivery diet company Diet Chef says ‘The great thing about water is that its calorie free. It’s important to keep us healthy by drinking water to replace the fluid lost throughout the day. We should plan to have water with us throughout the day until it becomes a habit – making it easier to get enough every day. If you don’t like the taste of plain water a sugar-free, low calorie cordial can make it easier to drink’. Making yourself stay hydrated can sometimes be a bit difficult, but if you stick with it, you’ll find that drinking enough water becomes a regular and easy habit.
