How To Push Your Children Towards Being Better People

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m sure you all love your kids and you think they’re great. But, it’s your job as a parent to always want that little bit more for them, you want them to be the best they can be and to do the best they can in all aspects of their lives. You want them to succeed and most of all, you want them to be happy. How can you ensure these things? How can you instil the right characteristics into your kids and make sure they grow up to be motivated and open people? Try this:

  1. Lead by example. Your kids will imitate you, even if they don’t realise they are doing it. Even if the characteristics you’re trying to impart aren’t quite you, try your best to emulate them. If you want to see generosity then be generous, if you want to see openness then be open etc.
  2. Listen to your kids. Things that happen in day to day life, the things they say and do may well present the perfect teaching moments for you to impart the traits you want to see in your children!
  3. Share experiences. If you’ve had an experience you think illustrates a characteristic you believe is important then tell your kids about it and see what they think they’d do in the same situation. Make sure you encourage the proper behaviour and discourage the improper ones.
  4. Corrections. If your kids behave in a way which you don’t deem acceptable or aren’t consistent with the characteristics you’re trying to instil, then correct them. Disciplining can help to teach the lesson and make sure the mistake isn’t repeated, sometimes tough love is important.
  5. Use music. We all love a good song so pick one which talks about the values you’re trying to instil and then discuss those lyrics with your kids. Ask questions and let them ask you questions an open forum for discussion is important to a learning environment.
