‘Vixens prepared’ for Thunderbirds challenge
The Melbourne Vixens will face off against a fired up Adelaide Thunderbirds side this Sunday when the two teams clash at Netball SA Stadium.
Earlier on this season, the Vixens outclassed the defending champions with a demoralising 38-goal thumping in Round 8 at Hisense Arena.
But true to form, the ANZ Championship still remains a tight battle amongst all teams and the Thunderbirds will come into this weekend’s game ready to attack.
Vixens coach Simone McKinnis spoke to the Adelaide Advertiser earlier this week, complacency it seems is not an issue and the Vixens will approach this game like any other match.
“Each week we aim to achieve things and it has been the same this week. We are focused, knowing these last two games are very important. We want to be building towards finals,” McKinnis told the Advertiser.
“That win against the Thunderbirds was a long time ago and a lot has happened since.”
Vixens goal keeper Geva Mentor will make her 100th ANZ Championship appearance and in doing so will become the first import player to reach this milestone
The English-born Mentor was part of the Thunderbirds squad for three seasons (2008-2010) before joining the Vixens in 2011. She was part of the Thunderbirds 2010 ANZ Championship premiership side, winning the Grand Final MVP award in their win over the Magic.
“It’s an honour to be recognised but also to be playing within this tough competition and to make that many court appearances, it’s really great because it’s not easy when you are up against the best players in the world,” Mentor said.
“For me this competition has been life changing, it has helped me cement my roots in a different country.”
“This is home for me, I have bought a property out here, found the love of my life out here, and this is where I want to settle. The fact that I am so happy off the court I think has had a big part to play for my performances on court.”
The Vixens travel to Adelaide tomorrow morning before their Round 13 game.
