Nearly 100 vehicles, ranging from boxcars and street cars, to dragsters and motorbikes roared the Northern Lights Raceway to life this past weekend. It marks the beginning of another season for the Fort St. John Drag Racing Association.
Race fans caught two full days of rubber burning action, with some cars topping speeds of 180m/ph.
This year, Northern Lights laid down new pavement for the season. But for some racers, it could pose a problem.
“We’ve completely re-done the track,” said association president Dale Phillips. “It’s a pretty (fresh) track this weekend, and it came around really fast. Sometimes that’s a big issue with drag racing… if you can’t get traction, it just doesn’t work.”
That wasn’t the case this weekend. Despite a couple no-shows, the fans got exactly what they wanted; 2 full days of loud engines and fast cars.
The next event for the Northern Lights Raceway is on Father’s Day weekend (June 14/15). General admission on each day is $5, with on-site washrooms and concessions throughout the complex. During lunch hours, the pit is opened up for the public to come down and see for themselves.
