A rare full-sized oil painting by iconic Canadian painter Lawren Harris sold at auction Monday night for $2.l million, less than its estimated low price of $2.5 million and well short of its expected high of $3.5 million.
The sale price is surprisingly low given Harris’s stature as a founder of the Group of Seven painters and possibly its most famous member.
Indeed, Lake Superior Painting X, a landscape of the Great Lake’s north shore, is the kind of work collectors have much coveted in recent years. In 2009, a small Harris sketch of a similar Lake Superior scene called The Old Stump sold for $3.5 million.
Indeed, Lake Superior Painting X was picked by some as a reasonable contender to break the 12-year-old Canadian price record at auction of $5.1 million. That was paid for a Paul Kane portrait in 2002. Its $2.1 million sale price doesn’t crack the top five.
