Summer means kids’ sports camps in Oakley
OAKLEY — Tennis anyone?
The city’s recreation division is offering a handful of weeklong tennis camps for young people starting this month.
Youths ages 4 to 8 will learn new skills through drills and competing with their peers in interclub matches.
Certified tennis instructors will give the lessons, which will be overseen by Diamond Hills Sports Club Tennis Director Darrin Cohen.
Participants will have the option to cool off in a swimming pool as well as learn the rudiments of golfing.
The camps are 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays starting June 9.
Additional sessions begin June 16, June 23, July 7 and July 14.
The cost is $105 for Oakley residents, $115 for non-residents. Preregistration is required.
And if tennis isn’t your child’s thing, there are plenty of other ways he or she can develop athletic skills while learning teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship.
The city is providing four week-long camps for golf, flag football and other sports.
- The first is beginning golf lessons for ages 5 to 9; classes are 9 a.m. to noon starting June 16. Kids will learn the fundamentals of putting, chipping and driving along with the rules, strategy and etiquette of the game. The equipment is provided and modified for younger players.The cost is $149 for Oakley residents, $159 for non-residents.
- A multisport camp for ages 4 to 6 will be offered 9 a.m. to noon starting June 23. Children will be introduced to baseball, basketball and soccer through exercises in which they will develop hand-eye coordination and balance at their own pace. Everyone will receive a T-shirt, ball and an evaluation.The cost is $139 for Oakley residents, $149 for non-residents.
- A second multisport camp for older children — ages 6 to 12 — also will take place 9 a.m. to noon starting June 23. Classes will focus on playground games — kick ball, dodge ball, Ultimate Frisbee and capture the flag. Everyone receives a T-shirt and merit award.
- The cost is $139 for Oakley residents, $149 for non-residents.
A flag football camp for ages 5 to 12 will be offered 9 a.m. to noon starting July 7. Grouped by age, kids will learn the rudiments of passing, rushing, receiving and defense as well as the sport’s rules and strategy.
The week will end with a “super bowl,” in which campers will show off their new skills. Youngsters all receive a T-shirt, football and an evaluation.
