Breast Cancer Myths: Part Three

Continuing in my short series of articles exploring and disproving some of the bigger myths surrounding breast cancer, part three will look some more into some false causes and risk factors. Remember, when dealing with a disease like cancer, get your facts from your doctor and ignore hearsay! Chances are it’ll just scare you and leave you not doing things which caused you no harm in the first place.

  1. It only occurs in old ladies – Not true. Though older ladies are more prone to the disease, and the older you get the higher the risk gets, it’s certainly not a condition which is only felt towards the end of life. Younger ladies are vulnerable too and breast cancer can be diagnosed at any age. When the disease is diagnosed in a younger woman it tends to be more aggressive which makes it much more dangerous too!
  2. Plastic Surgery is a Cause of Cancer – Not true. It’s absolutely not true that any form of plastic surgery can raise your risk of contracting breast cancer. In fact, for those who elect to have breast reduction surgeries, the risk may actually diminish up to around 60%! The only issue plastic surgery may cause is with mammograms when a lady has had implants, the scanning procedure may not be as effective or may miss bits as the implant will get in the way.
  3. Breast Amputation Removes any chance of recurrence of Breast Cancer – Though it’s certainly true that removing a breast which had never been cancerous will remove any risk of contracting cancer in that breast, removing one which has had it before leaves you with a 4% chance of it coming back. This is due to some breast tissue being missed and the possibility of recurring metastasis.
