Two contests associated with Municipal Government Day will be accepting submissions until the end of this week.

The nomination period for the Good Neighbour Awards and submissions to the Municipal Government Day Art Contest will both close on Friday, June 6.

Residents of the city who go ‘above and beyond in providing assistance, a service or are just a truly outstanding citizen’ can be nominated by emailing a name and 225 word write-up to goodneighbour@cityofgp.com. Last year’s winner was Walter Salter, who at age 87 was commended for shovelling neighbour’s sidewalks and cars, wrangling down an escaped dog and reporting a would-be burglar.

Meanwhile, the Swan City’s up and coming artists have until the end of the week to complete their masterpieces. The theme of this year’s contest is ‘100 Years Young.’ Contestants, in celebration of Grande Prairie’s centenary, are asked to submit work that is based on the City’s history or is futuristic in nature. The city of Grande Prairie has partnered with the Centre for Creative Arts, the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie and local school boards to facilitate the contest. The three age groups are; up to Grade 3, Grades 4-9 and Grades 10-12 and full criteria can be found at www.cityofgp.com. Submissions can be mailed to communications@cityofgp.com.

Municipal Government Day is slated for June 11 at Muskoseepi Park from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will include a free barbecue and the presentation of the Good Neighbour and art contest awards.
