Neenah – Preparations are underway for one of the country’s oldest graduation parties, which has been held every year since 1936. Organizers say the goal is to provide a safe venue for the kids to party after the ceremony.

Neenah’s graduation is tonight at 7, and most grads will come to Riverside Park afterwards.   Activities start at 10 and go until 3 Friday morning.

What makes this event special is that it’s been held for the past 78 years, making it one of the longest running post graduation parties on record.

It was started after a Neenah student was killed on graduation night in 1936. Donald Lenz died after drinking and driving on Highway 45, which is now Highway 76.

The very next year, parents organized a post-graduation party at Riverside Park — and the trend continues today.

“It’s to keep them safe, because otherwise they could have the opportunity to make bad choices. Keep them safe and have a great time and still be able to celebrate with all their friends. For a lot of the kids this is the only party they will have, and it’s a great party. They have a great time,” parent Mary Alice Browne said.

Those who show up have a chance to win prizes, play games, and enjoy lots of free food.

“I have two older brothers that have done this and loved it. My oldest brother won I think one of the big prizes, which was nice, because I get to use it too. I don’t know I’m just really excited. I’ve always heard positive things about it. Never negative, so I don’t know I’m just really excited,” said Maggie Weklar, a Neenah graduate.

Organizers expect more than 80 percent of the graduating class to show up.

We’re told many of the big prizes are given away just before 3, which ensures many stay.
