Union reps eye off spots in Country squad

JAKE West and Aubre Harmse were quietly confident of making the Central Queensland Rugby Union representative team, and now both are ready to go on an all-out attack to be selected in the Queensland Country squad.

After finding out on Tuesday that they will be part of the CQ team, the Gladstone Goats players are preparing for two matches in three days, playing tomorrow and then on Monday in Rockhampton.

Having made the CQ side before but not progressed further, the players have nothing to lose in impressing selectors when they get on the park against Southern Queensland and North Queensland.

“It will definitely be the toughest and quickest matches we have ever played,” Harmse said.

The Queensland Country trial will be a test for halfback Harmse and hooker West, but even without moving to the next level the Goats players are hoping to come away with some valuable experience.

The pair also wouldn’t mind being on a winning side, which Harmse said was a possibility with the strength of the CQ squad.

“We went to a training camp of a 35-man squad,” he said.

“We knew we were up against it, it is a pretty tough competition.”

The CQ team is made up of players from Gladstone, Rockhampton, Wide Bay, Central Highlands and Western Queensland.
