Baltimore 500: The Race Is On To Adopt A Purrfect Pet For Free

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—It’s called the Baltimore 500, but it has nothing do with auto racing. It’s all about helping animals.

Ron Matz reports if you’ve ever wanted a cat or kitten, there’s no better time to adopt one than right now.

Reach out and touch a new friend. You can adopt a cat or kitten for free this month. It’s the Baltimore 500.

“The Maryland SPCA is one of the three shelters in the Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance participating in the Baltimore 500. Anyone can come to the Maryland SPCA, BARCS or the Baltimore Humane Society and take home a furry little friend,” said Tina Regester, Maryland SPCA.

It’s kitten season, when homeless cats and kittens overwhelm area shelters.

“We’re in kitten season, and there are so many homeless kittens as well as cats that need good homes. We encourage people to visit their local shelter and find a friend for life,” Regester said.

Dr. Jane Brunt helps save those lives providing free wellness exams at the Cat Hospital at Towson.

“The Cat Hospital at Towson has partnered with BAWA for six years now. We provide free wellness exams for anyone that wants to take advantage of that, so during the adoption process they’ll get a little goodie bag with a toy–toys are really important for cats–and a voucher for a free exam,” Brunt said.”There is so much cat owners need to know about to have a successful relationship with cats in their homes. We want people to have a long and loving relationship with their cat. We can provide that at the Cat Hospital at Towson.”

And maybe adopt 8-week-old kittens.

“We have over 100 cats and kittens here looking for homes, so we hope people will come down and visit us, the Maryland SPCA or the Baltimore Humane Society, to find a new cat or kitten,” said Deb Rahl, BARCS.

Last year, more than 700 cats and kittens found new homes during the Baltimore 500.

All cats and kittens available for adoption are spayed, neutered and vaccinated.
