Staunton named among favorite mountain towns
STAUNTON – Staunton received national recognition this month for being one of America’s favorite mountain towns, according to Travel and Leisure magazine.
Staunton has been featured in Travel and Leisure before. In 2012 it was ranked as having one of the greatest American main streets in the country. This time Staunton was names 18 out of 20 by the magazine for favorite mountain town.
“Staunton, once a stopover for pioneers headed West, now draws artists, musicians, and actors,” the article said.
The article referenced the American Shakespeare Center, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum and downtown restaurant The Shack.
“Thanks to its location in the fertile Shenandoah Valley, it’s becoming a regional destination for locavore menus, like the green butter lettuce soup and pork belly with pickled butternut squash served at The Shack,” the write-up said.
Staunton wasn’t the only Valley city to be recognized. Charlottesville was named no. 10 favorite American mountain town. Number one on the list was Aspen, Colorado.
