Forecast king tides a glimpse of the future, green group warns
By PETER COLLINS
KING tides along the south-west this weekend will give a snapshot of how coastlines may look under global warming-triggered sea level rises, according to a national environment group.
Early afternoon tide level peaks of up to 1.28 metres were predicted by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for yesterday through to Thursday.
Green Cross Australia has asked residents to photograph and share images for the ongoing Witness King Tides project.
The group’s chief executive Mara Bun said sharing photographs would raise awareness of sea level rise and build a picture of what Victoria’s coastal communities may look like in the future as global sea levels rise.
“Witness King Tides will help us to identify and understand the impacts of rising sea levels on our beaches, coastal areas and shoreline communities,” she said.
