The event moves to Portland for the first time having been held in Plymouth, Devon for many years.

Having registered their digital cards on the Friday evening at the Harbour Lights restaurant and bar on Portland Island, competitors will set forth next morning from Portland Marina.

Diving from craft run by Scimitar Diving, they will shoot pictures eligible under three main categories – Marine Life, Mankind in the Sea and Compact Cameras – plus a lighthearted Humour category.

The competition does not involve picture portfolios but simply up to three images per entrant. Each photographer is allowed to submit an entry into two of the three main categories, plus an entry into Humour.

Users of DSLRs or mirrorless cameras will need to enter Marine Life and Mankind in the Sea. While those with compact cameras have their own category, it is not imperative that they enter images into it.

With entries filed by 6pm, contestants will be able to enjoy a meal at the Harbour Lights before the judging of projected images and the awarding of prizes.

Marine Life, Mankind in the Sea and Compact Cameras will be judged by photographers Gavin Parsons, Stuart Philpott and Dan Bolt. Humour will be voted on by the screenings audience.

The most valuable prize is reserved for the winner of the Marine Life category. He or she will receive, from Scuba Tours Worldwide, a seven-night diving holiday for two in the Maldives.

The holiday is, says the company, worth “up to £2800”. It will be taken aboard either the Sea Queen or the Sea Spirit liveaboard.

A glass trophy awaits the Overall Winner, judged from Marine Life, Mankind in the Sea and Compact Cameras.

Diving costs £40 per head for the day, reduced to £30 if inclement conditions force a retreat to close local sites.

Advanced registration needs to be completed by Wednesday, 25 June. Alternatively entrants can register in person on Friday 4 July or, by pre-arrangement with the organiser, on the Saturday morning.

“However there will be a £5 late registration charge for registering and paying on Friday night or Saturday morning,” says BSoUP.

“We strongly urge you to register and pay in advance as this minimises what is required during a very busy Friday night registration session.”
