BUFFALO, N.Y. — The family of Alix Rice, hit while she was skateboarding home by a doctor back in 2011, is pleading with the state Assembly to pass a law in her name.

Alix’s Law would close a loophole that only requires drivers to report an accident when they know there’s been an injury or property damage.

The driver, Dr. James Corasanti, argued he was too intoxicated to know he hit Alix. He was later acquitted of felony charges.

Rice’s mother, Tammy Schueler, said the law would prevent future drunk drivers from escaping justice.

“Why wouldn’t you want to fix it? Why wouldn’t you want to hold drunk drivers accountable for their actions? To me, it’s unbelievable that it hasn’t passed already,” Schueler said.

The Assembly has four days left to vote before this year’s session comes to a close.
