Local roundup: Connecticut Tigers lose season opener

Troy, N.Y. – The Tri-City ValleyCats broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning and then held on for a 3-2 victory over the Connecticut Tigers on opening night of the New York-Penn League.

 

Chase Edwards took the loss for the Tigers, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven.

 

Rashard Brown went 2-for-4 for Connecticut, driving in a run in the third with a base hit, while Franklin Navarro hit a solo home run in the eight.

 

Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 7.

 

NECBL

 

• The Mystic Schooners’ NECBL game against the Keene Swamp Bats at Fitch High was postponed by wet field conditions and will be made up at a date to be determined. The Schooners (3-1) are home again today (6 p.m.) against the Newport Gulls.

• Fitch High School’s Tyler Latham, who won two events at Monday’s State Open meet, headlines a large field of local athletes who will participate in the CIAC decathlon, heptahlon, hammer and steeplechase championship on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Coast Guard Academy. The following is the schedule of events and list of local athletes who are on the performance lists:

• Christopher Rosenberg of Old Saybrook won the Niantic Bay 10K with a time of 35:08 and Ledyard’s Tricky Tanksley was the top women’s finisher in 42:14. Rounding out the top 10 were Mathew Ridley of Mystic (36:17), Chris Mayer (36:30), Chaz Koch of Old Lyme (36:49), Jeff Walker of Westerly (37:34), Ryan Murdoch (37:49), Brandon Mehlinger (38:16), Brandon Dinsmore of East Lyme (39:31), Robert Wilkinson of Niantic (39:43) and Westerly’s Jeffrey Vuono (39:56).

 

U.S. women’s soccer

 

• The United State’s women’s national team will hold a free public training session on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The team plays France on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Fans can park in Lot 7 and enter through Gate C. Fans will get a first-hand look at how the U.S. women prepares for a match the day before a game and hear exclusive interviews with select players. Tickets for Thursday’s game are now on sale through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-877-522-8499 (8 a.m.-10 p.m.) and at the XL Center ticket office in Hartford (Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.). Tickets will not be sold at Rentschler Field until the day of the game.
