BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont is hosting the two day Vermont Decathlon State Championships. Unlike previous years, the women are competing in ten events instead of their usual heptathlon eight events. The women’s decathlon caught the eye of Canadian athlete Leanna Carriere. The Edmonton native asked if she could participate in the event to help train for the heptathlon and pole vault at the Canadian Nationals later this summer. She certainly put on a show in Burlington Monday, clearing 13-05.25 in the pole vault.
In the girls meet, Carlee Fowler of BFA-St. Albans holds a 273 point over 2013 heptathlon champ Katherine Furland of Essex. Fowler won the pole vault and finished second in the javelin. Furland won the 100m and placed fourth in the discus.

On the boys side, Kaleb Kasupski holds a narrow 16 point lead over Alec Eschholz of Mount Mansfield. Eschholz won the 100m and the long jump. Kasupski didn’t win a single event, but had four top three finishes. The final day of competition is Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. with the boys 110m hurdles. The girls begin at 10 a.m. with the 100m hurdles.
