Eating out at the Scunthorpe pub with a parrot

THE Cocked Hat on Ferry Road in Scunthorpe has won runner-up in Restaurant of the Year three years in a row according to its website.

And it’s not hard to see why as this place offers a high standard of pub grub.

Although I chose to take my colleague as a dining partner, I could easily have dined alone here and kept myself entertained with the mini aviary in the bar area.

Zak the parrot certainly had a lot to say.

And Zak wasn’t the only pretty bird in the room as I discovered when my starter of chicken goujons arrived.

The succulent chicken was coated in a crisp, golden batter that fell apart perfectly when I cut into it.

Drizzled with chilli sauce and a healthy helping of salad it was just the right amount to keep me going until my main course arrived.

My dining partner had a classic prawn cocktail and tells me the prawns were juicy and refreshing, nicely complemented with a salad.

On to mains, which arrived soon after our plates had been cleared.

I opted for the salmon dish which came with a choice of mash or dauphinoise potatoes.

My cooking skills don’t extend to dauphinoise so I thought I would try those for a treat.

There was also a choice of vegetables or salad and as I had salad for starter I decided to go for veg.

I was served a portion fit for a king – carrots, cauliflower with white sauce, cabbage, swede and new potatoes meant I was spoilt for choice.

The salmon was well cooked, moist and juicy inside.

However I did feel a twinge of envy when I spotted my partner’s lamb shank across the table.

Covered in gravy, and with Yorkshire pudding, it looked like English food at its best.

Served with carrots and potatoes, he informs me the shank was melt in the mouth.

Onto dessert, although I have to admit I wasn’t sure I’d be able to squeeze it in.

I decided to have the treacle pudding which came with lashings of warm, thick custard and some cream to top it off.

The pudding was soft inside with a sugary exterior.

Although I couldn’t quite finish it off, my partner had no problem offering to help.

He opted for the chocolate fudge cake which came with two scoops of ice cream and cream which he gobbled down in about five seconds.

The experience was topped off with the friendly and attentive waitress who treated us like regulars.

The Cocked Hat is very reasonably priced and offers daily specials such as two for £10 on fish and chips – an absolute bargain.

It also offers a carvery and even take-out Sunday lunches for those who want to save on the washing up.
