It wasn’t exactly how David Lucas was hoping to go out.
But all things considered, Warwick’s rising senior had one heck of a junior season heaving the discus repping the Warriors.
Lucas on Sunday had a throw of 166-0 for a 16th-place finish in the New Balance National Championships at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
His best throw this spring — great timing — came in the PIAA-AAA finals, when Lucas uncorked a 187-3 to capture the silver medal.
He was hoping to ride that momentum into the national outdoor meet in North Carolina. But the best he could muster was a 166-0.

Daniel Haugh from Georgia had the winning throw on Sunday with a heave of 197-2.
Reigning PIAA-AAA champ Max Adams from Hempfield Area, who topped Lucas in the state finals last month, finished second on Sunday with a throw of 187-6; he won PIAA gold with a 198-3.
Lucas won the District 3 discus title with a throw of 163-10, and he won the L-L League title with a heave of 167-1.
Lucas, who finished fourth in the Penn Relays discus finals earlier this spring, will be one of the top throwers in the area to keep an eye on next spring.
