After seeing its youth swim class double enrollment, St. John the Baptist Parish is looking to offer free adult classes this summer. Parish officials are currently making plans for a pilot program.

Interim Recreation Director Debra Poche said the department’s free youth swim program, which starts this week, increased enrollment from 150 last year to 300 participants. Poche said inquiries during a registration day for that program prompted the parish to try an adult swim class.

“When we were at Walmart, a lot of adults were saying they couldn’t swim and asking why don’t we offer a course,” Poche said. “We already have 15 names.”

Poche said she is trying to hire staff for the adult program. It will be held after the Ashley Kelly youth program ends July 25.

The department is looking at holding on-site registrations July 26 for east bank residents, July 28  for west bank residents. Enrollment for the adult class will be limited to 100 residents, Poche said. “That number may increase depending on the number of instructors,” she said.

Meanwhile, for $1, residents may enjoy a respite from the hot temperatures in the parish’s two public pools. They are now open for the summer.

On the east bank, the pool is located at Regala Park, 194 Regala Park Road, Reserve. The west bank pool is in Edgard at 136 Castle Drive.

The pools are opened to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to  8 p.m. and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend hours at Regala are from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Edgard weekend hours are 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
