Teams turn out for dragon boat racing in Waterloo
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Six teams competed in dragon boat races in the Cedar River in Waterloo as part of an annual event.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1yaDrtx ) the 20-person teams competed in the Sunday races, which were part of My Waterloo Days events.
Rowers struggled to work together as they paddled the 40-foot boats with a dragon’s head and spiky tail.
Stefanie Niemann, who was captain of one of the boats, called it “an adrenaline rush” because the race only takes a minute.
Another captain, Cindy Lang, says it’s like a sprint, and “you don’t stop until they tell you to stop.”
