Harford Gymnastics gymnasts win 20 state titles
Harford Gymnastics Training Center’s Level 2 through 8 gymnasts won 20 state titles at their Maryland state gymnastics championships this season.
Leading the scoring for Harford Gymnastics was Camryn Faulkner, who won the all-around Level 2 award with a club high score of 38.075, and the gold medal on uneven bars with a 9.625 at the Level 2 state meet in Williamsport March 30. Teammate Kaitlin Grimm also won the all-around at Level 2 in her age group with a 37.825, and was the state champion on bars with a 9.60 and floor with a 9.55. Level 2 gymnast Sarah Gnacek won the gold medal on vault with a 9.60 and teammate Paige Sullivan was the champion on bars with a 9.475.
Competing in the Level 3 state meet, held at First Class Gymnastics in Annapolis on April 12, Lian Yale was the all-around champion with a 37.20, and won the gold on balance beam with a 9.20. Teammate Gabrielle Curriden was the state champion on balance beam with a 9.375 and Level 3 gymnast Melina Mercado won the gold on uneven bars with a 9.50. Mercado also received the Maryland Outstanding Gymnast award which is given to a gymnast at each level for her involvement in gymnastics and extra-curricular activities, as well as outstanding character traits.
Harford’s winning ways continued at the Level 4 state meet, held at the Churchville Athletic Complex on April 5 and 6. The team was led by Kayla Iwanowski, who scored a 37.125 to win the state all-around title in her age group. Teammate Ella Beauchamp won the gold on balance beam with a high score of 9.60. Katie Weaver won the state title on vault with a 9.40.
At the Level 6 state meet held on April 26 and 27 in Landover, Harford gymnasts earned four state titles, led by Megan Despres, who won the gold on balance beam for the second year in a row, with a score of 9.55. She was joined by Ashley Fannon, who won the state title on uneven bars with a 9.25. Teammate Lauren Winn won the gold medal on floor exercise with a 9.325. Winn also was awarded the Maryland State Outstanding Gymnast for Level 6. Grace Cross was steady on balance beam to win the gold medal on that event with a 9.40.
Harford Level 8 gymnast Amya Hill won two state titles, winning gold on floor with a 9.45 and uneven bars with a 9.575. The Level 8 state meet was held on March 15 and 16 in Landover.
Hill was one of four regional qualifiers at Level 8, joined by Caitlyn Allen, Amber Adkins and Erin Hyman. Harford also qualified Level 10 gymnasts Jordyn Oster and Christina Riggins to regionals and Level 9 gymnasts Lindsay Rush and Alexis Kratzmeier. Rush achieved the first alternate position to the national meet in Florida.
Competing at the Level 5 state meet, Harford gymnast Maria Beyer became the third gymnast from the team to receive the honor of the Maryland Outstanding Gymnast award for her accomplishments in school, gymnastics and extracurricular activities. Harford gymnasts celebrated their success this season with an end of the year banquet on May 18 at the Richlin Ballroom.
