Gym camp a big success for Ruidoso

Ruidoso Mountain Top Gymnastics hosted gymnasts ages seven and older for a training camp Friday through Saturday.

“We had 44 gymnasts attend,” Amy Eggleston, Ruidoso gym director, said. “Many were from Ruidoso, Roswell, Las Cruces, Los Alamos and Rio Rancho.”

The camp brought in coaches from El Paso, Lubbock, Rio Rancho as well as local gymnastics coaches. This year marked the 18th year for the camp.

“Out-of-town camps were expensive and not accessible to everyone,” Eggleston said.

Each day the camp had a set schedule that alternated activities throughout the gym.

“The goal was to squeeze as much gymnastics as possible into two days,” Eggleston said. “We let the children train with other coaches to get a different perspective and to learn new drills.”

The drills help the gymnasts with skills that they may be struggling with in the sport. Athletes received 12 hours of training including team building, strength training, dance, and rock wall in addition to the four main gymnastics events. The days ended with a fun activity such as skits, charades, and building mat forts.

“It is a good learning opportunity for coaches in the area as well,” Eggleston said.

Over all, the camp is beneficial to all who attend and the gymnasts are able to get a new perspective on gym routines.

“Sometimes it just takes hearing something differently for it to click all of a sudden,” Eggleston said. “The children hear my voice day in and day out, so it is good for them to have to achieve different expectations.”
