Boone’s Adam Barnard Leads Local Contingent at New Balance Outdoor Nationals

Daniel Boone state champion Adam Barnard ran to a ninth place finish last weekend in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.

 

68 national championships were awarded on the weekend to athletes who posted qualifying marks to compete in the championship divisions. Barnard competed against 28 other runners and crossed with a personal best of 4:10.23.

 

Dobyns-Bennett state runner-up Bryce Ailshie finished 15th of 33 runners in the 800 meters, also posting a personal best time of 1:52.42. State champion Chase Hilton of Bearden was 11th at 1:51.37.

 

ETSU signee Haydn Borghetti-Metz of Volunteer was 19th with a time of 6:25.37 in the 2000 meter steeplechase. The winner, Bailey Roth of Colorado Springs, broke a 13-year-old national record with a time of 5:41.67.

 

Dobyns-Bennett’s Adriana Watkins was having a solid effort in the heptathlon, but couldn’t finish the seventh and final event. Watkins was 15th in the 100 meter hurdle, 14th throwing the javelin for the first time, 13th in the long jump, 12th in the high jump, 11th in the 200 meters and seventh in the shot put, but did not start in the 800 meters.

 

A number of other athletes qualified for the ‘emerging’ division competitions. Daniel Boone’s Christian Stumpf jumped 6-5 to finish second in the emerging high jump while teammate Jared Phillips was 16th at 6-3. Stumpf teamed with Ashton Wilson, Andrew Myers and Steven Carr to place 19th out of 41 emerging teams in the 4×200 meter relay at 1:32.10.

 

Cherokee’s Savannah Marlow was 26th in the emerging discus field with a throw of 107-01 while Sullivan East’s Luke Meade crossed in 19th at 4:20.96 in the emerging mile.

 

A number of freshman divisions are also included. Science Hill’s Alex Crigger placed fifth in the freshman mile with a time of 4:30.28.
