DARN GOOD: From left, Imogen Hale, Lucy Wright, Lauren Fenton and Charlotte Tombs.KNITTING needles have come out at St Mary’s Catholic School and it’s all to bring a bit of warmth to the homeless this winter.

The school’s Mini Vinnies group has been busy knitting blanket squares for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

The children have been dedicating one lunch hour per week to the project to make colourful squares to be made into blankets for the homeless.

Year 6 pupil Ruth Toakley said she enjoyed being involved in the project and it was going well.

“When you can do something, it’s important to make a difference,” she said.

The knitting isn’t the end of the pupils’ efforts for the charity, with children set to rug up in beanies, gloves and scarves on the last day of term next Friday for a gold coin donation.

Then it’s back to school that night for the annual Mini Vinnies Winter Sleep Out.

Children and their parents camp out in sleeping bags in the school hall for the night for the cause.
