GTHL to consider ‘look-up’ lines along boards at hockey rinks

The Greater Toronto Hockey League will consider implementing new lines on the ice in hockey rinks to improve safety.

The bright orange lines, which would be painted along the perimeter of the rink, are meant to be a visual cue to players to look up before crashing into the boards. Looking up at the appropriate time could prevent head and neck injuries.

The idea belongs to a former high school hockey player in Massachusetts who became paralyzed after an accident on the ice. Tom Smith was left with a spinal cord injury after crashing into the boards at a hockey game.

Smith said he hopes the NHL will one day adopt the ‘look-up line’ to help improve safety.
