Every year young women from throughout Summit County compete for the title of Miss Summit County Rodeo Queen. The contest embodies the love of the sport of rodeo along with a reminder of our western heritage. Qualities needed to win include portraying excellence in sportsmanship, high moral and ethical character, and careful and humane treatment of animals.
This year’s contest took place on Saturday, June 14, at the Fairgrounds Arena. Ten girls competed this year, with stiff competition all around. Each girl gave a 3-minute speech about the tradition of the historic Summit County Fair, answered an impromptu question, were quizzed on their knowledge of the county and rodeo, gave a brief interview and competed in a horsemanship event, riding several patterns including a presentation ride.
This year’s winner, Kassidy Jones of Coalville, wowed the judges with her horsemanship, public speaking abilities and modeling of western wear. Along with the title, Jones received a customized Rocking R Saddle, 2014 Summit County Rodeo Queen belt buckle and a crown. Kassidy will serve as an ambassador for the county, the rodeo, and to the general public at various activities throughout the County and the State in an effort to promote the Fair. Some of these activities include the Oakley, Henefer and Park City 4th of July Parades, Kamas Fiesta Days Parade and The Days of 47 Parade in Salt Lake City. In addition to Rodeo Queen, titles were awarded to 1st Attendant, McKaylie Richins and 2nd Attendant Elise Bush and Miss Congeniality Fallon Richmond.
In conjunction with the Miss Summit County Rodeo Queen contests, the Miss Little Buckaroo Rodeo Queen contest also took place. Following the same format, this contest judged young ladies in the County ages 9 14. This year’s Little Miss Buckaroo Rodeo Queen is Gracelyn Hortin, 1st Attendant Aubree Jacobsen and 2nd Attendant /Miss Congeniality Emily Jaques.
Event organizer Mardee Jones said “Summit County is lucky to have such a high caliber group of young ladies to represent us. They all did a wonderful job and it was fun being a part of such a wonderful contest.”
“Havin’ a Good Time Since 1909” the Summit County Fair has been a part of the County’s cultural and social fabric since the early 1909 and remains an active part of Summit County.
