John M. Carlevale Sr., 70, has announced his candidacy for secretary of state, running as a Republican in support of the Voter ID law and of holding a state Constitutional Convention.

Carlevale, of West Greenwich, also sought the office in 1992 and 1994. In 1996 he ran for the state Senate; and in 1998 for lieutenant governor.

He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and the University of Rhode Island, embarking on a 33-year career in human services, first as a social case worker and later as a child development specialist.

In 1968 he helped lead the first successful social workers’ strike in Rhode Island and helped found the R.I. Chapter of the Social Service Employees Union International.

He co-founded and became sole owner of Tot-Lot Child Care Products and Consortium Publishing, under which he edited and published college text books by various authors.

He was also a cofounder in 1991 of State of the State radio and public access television shows and in 1993 of the nonprofit corporation that produced the programs.

Running as Democrats are Nellie Gorbea and Guillaume de Ramel.
