Snack Attack: How to keep your Diabetes on Track
A lot of what it takes to live with type two diabetes is lifestyle change. If you’re willing and able to take the right steps and moderate yourself in certain ways then you can live with the condition and lose out on very little in your day to day life. It takes being constantly aware of your condition and being able to monitor and counter your blood sugar levels but given the right time and effort you shouldn’t find the change too much. Like all things, you’ll get used to it and in actuality the changes which type two diabetes requires are actually very good for your general wellbeing anyway.
Snacking is a tricky thing to do if you’re a diabetic simply because your body may react to the intake of food in a negative way. Your blood sugar should be monitored the first few times you snack after being diagnosed with diabetes, once you learn to predict your reaction and you’re confident in your ability to counter it then you shouldn’t have too much of a problem. You’ll also need to select your snack carefully, as diabetics in general should steer clear of overly processed foods and complex sugars.
Remember your P’s and Q’s – Portion size and quality are the most important things to remember when you’re picking your snack. Don’t overeat as this will effect your blood-sugar far more than a smaller snack would and remember that you’re going for healthy snacks which won’t harm your wellness. An example of a good snack would be three crackers with one slice of cheese, pick this over a chocolate bar and you’ll be snacking healthily before you know it!
Eduction – If you take the time to learn about the relative benefits of nutrition and how it’ll effect you and your condition then you’ll be able to select the best snacks for your wellbeing. Providing you understand how the things you’re eating are affecting you, you’ll be able to plan and predict what’s best and what’s worst for you and plan around it.
Plan Ahead – The biggest changes you’ll have to make for type two diabetes involve planning ahead and making sure you anticipate yourself and your needs. Make sure you have healthy snacks in the house and readily available for when you’re peckish!
