How to Overcome Anxiety with Simple Strategies

Whilst anxiety is an extremely common mental-health issue experienced regularly by millions of people, it is often misunderstood and unfairly dismissed as something that is easy to remedy. However, for many people, anxiety can have a profoundly detrimental impact on their lives – often resulting in depression, mental and physical illness, which affects not only the individual who suffers from it, but those around them.

However, it is within many people’s capabilities to overcome anxiety if they adopt certain strategies:

As a starting point – it can be helpful to accept that you are experiencing anxiety and not be in denial of it. This will help you to focus on what is causing it, and help you to devise means of reducing it. In order to provide the mental spaces that are necessary to overcome anxiety, it is important that you try and stop your mind from wandering in a negative and uncontrolled manner. This can be achieved by focusing on the positive aspects of your life, and what makes you happy. This will elevate your mood, and help you sleep better at night – if you clear your mind of negative-thoughts before going to bed.

If you suffer from anxiety, keeping yourself busy and organising routines can also be beneficial. This will stop you from becoming pre-occupied on issues that trouble you – so it’s always helpful to make sure you conduct your day-to-day chores, including exercise, as normal.  Any regular form of exercise is good for you and can include brisk walking, swimming, cycling and jogging.

Whilst it can sometimes be difficult to express painful emotions, bottling them up is likely to do more harm. Whenever possible, you should share your worries with friends, and talking about them is sure to reduce your stress and anxiety levels. It’s very likely that your friends and loved ones will have experienced some form of anxiety themselves, and will be able to offer advice on how to overcome it.
