The struggle against type two diabetes is a lifelong battle that’s at best going to end in a long drawn out stalemate and at worst is going to end in a slow and painful loss. Due to its widespread nature people can misinterpret the condition as largely benign but it’s far from it. If untreated or unmanaged type two diabetes can cause nerve damage which can lead to infection and then amputation, blindness and ultimately death. It’s not a disease to mess with and it’s not something you’d ever want to experience yourself.
Of course, type two diabetes can be managed and millions of diabetics around the world successfully control their condition and live long and full lives. They just have to be a lot more careful than most other people have to be. There are all sorts of steps and precautions a type two diabetic can take to maintain their health and manage their condition and Yourwellness has dozens of articles aimed at just that.
One thing which can be incredibly helpful to a type two diabetic but is often overlooked is a pet, especially a dog. Pets come with all sorts of general advantages but they can be fantastic little helpers when it comes to managing the disease.
Dogs particularly are fantastic motivators if you’re trying to lose weight through exercise. A dog has to be walked at least once a day for a start. They’re also more than happy to go more than once or run with you if that’s your thing. Depending on how good your four legged friend is you might even be able to cycle while it runs along-side.
When you get back from you exercise session, sweating and exhausted your pet’s not going to just ignore you. It’s going to shower you with love and adoration and that on its own is a great source of support and motivation. They’re not going to look at you funny for not running as far they’re going to look at you with absolute unadulterated love, which is just what you’ll need to get back out there and keep trying!
