China Looks Set to Impose Carbon Targets by 2016
Global warming has been a prominent issue for many years now, with some countries up against pressure to lower their carbon footprint. One such country is China, which has stated that it will set a cap on its greenhouse gas emissions for the first time. This will make a huge impact on the global initiative, as China is the world’s biggest producer of carbon dioxide emissions. This is set to take place from 2016 in a bid to change what the majority of scientists agree is the number one cause of climate change. As China is making such as drastic change, it’s thought that it could spur other countries on to make more stringent cuts to their carbon emissions to tackle the effects of global warming.
Other large emitters include the United States, who could be encouraged after this statement to take a stronger action to lower their carbon footprint. This action improves the prospects for a strong international treaty which could be agreed at the United Nations climate change summit in 2015. Nearly 200 countries around the world have pledged to agree legally binding targets to reduce the emissions at the next climate change summit which takes place in Paris. Without strong efforts from around the globe, experts say there is virtually no chance of keeping global warming to 2C – following this, experts claims that the effects on the planet could be disastrous.
The United States are the second biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, currently accounting for 17.6 percent of the global total – the UK makes up just 1.6 percent. China’s changing attitude towards global warming could help other countries feel that its possible to do the same, leading the global initiative a little bit closer to a deal being agreed in 2015. Global warming has significant effects on the planet, which affect each and everyone of us, so it’s important that countries pull together to tackle it as a whole. If countries don’t put in the effort, it could spell disaster for the planet.
