Get flawless hair with these traditional home remedies
The popular ‘That 70’s show’ character Kitty Forman was absolutely right when she said, ‘Men have their cars, women have their hair.’ Hair is precious, and that’s why its upkeep is so important. In India, just as with everything, we have been blessed with tried-and-tested traditional home remedies that teach us how to take care of our hair. And it can all be done with ingredients that can be found easily in any traditional Indian kitchen. Check it out.
Curry leaves
Your usual kadi patta can do much more than add a kickass flavour to your curry; it can apparently stop hair fall and prevent premature greying too. Heat it along with some coconut oil to make a tonic, or grind it into a paste with water and apply it on to your scalp and lengths.
Fenugreek
Methi is a popular ingredient when it comes to haircare. Create a methi tonic by boiling a few leaves in water to cure hair fall or any other scalp issues. You can also infuse it with coconut oil and use it for an invigorating hot oil massage.
Mustard oil: Now this one definitely has a strong smell, but there’s nothing like mustard oil to moisturise, strengthen and nourish your dry, brittle hair. Just heat up some mustard oil and apply it generously onto your scalp and lengths for happy, healthy hair.
Yoghurt
Yoghurt contains lactic acid, which is great for getting rid of the fungus that causes dandruff and yeast infections on your scalp. Create a mask with yoghurt and a spoonful of lemon juice and say goodbye to all your dandruff concerns.
Coconut oil
Our mothers and grandmothers have been slathering coconut oil onto our scalps ever since we can remember and with good reason too. Coconut oil is known to be highly moisturising, and to prevent hair from getting dry and damaged. It’s also known to make each strand of your hair thicker, thus enabling it to grow longer.
Gooseberry
Amla is known to be yet another great staple hair treatment. Whether ingested orally or applied topically in the form of a paste or tonic, amla is known to promote hair health and add a fabulous shine to your tresses.
Soap pod
Shikakai is a completely herbal and natural hair cleanser. When mixed with water, shikakai powder can cleanse your scalp more gently and thoroughly than anything else. Skip your shampoo for a week and use a shikakai mixture in its place to see the difference.
Almond oil
Almond oil is a great source of Vitamin E and healthy fats. It speeds up hair growth enormously, and adds lustre and volume. Combine it with olive oil and apply it onto your lengths once a week for stronger, shinier hair.
