Get hair dye off skin with these simple hacks

Changing hair colours is a quick and easy way to change your look. If you have coloured your hair at home, you are pretty familiar with the desperation that sets in when you cannot get the excess hair colour off your hairline, nape of the neck, ears, nails and fingers. What do you do when you want to colour your hair at home, but do not want the hassle of dealing with stained skin? Good news! You can use products that you can find at home to get rid of the dye. Remember, if you do have any fall-out, it is important to not let it sit for a long time, and clean it off quickly.

Prevention is better than cure

You can apply Vaseline or any oil which prevents the dye from getting in contact with your skin along the hairline. This also moisturises your skin and well moisturised skin does not absorb the dye as much as dry skin does. You can also apply the petroleum jelly on the stained skin and let it soak into the skin for a little while, and then rub it gently until the colour fades and wash it off with soap.

Protect your nails and fingers

This is probably something you already do. Wear rubber gloves which are easily available in pharmacies while colouring your hair.

Vinegar

Dip a cotton ball in vinegar, and gently rib the dyed skin with this. The vinegar helps to slough off dead skin cells which have absorbed colour, revealing clear skin beneath. Do not use it near the eyes, and rinse thoroughly with water later.

Baking soda and liquid detergent

Combine equal parts of baking soda and a mild, liquid detergent and mix well. Apply this mixture to the stained skin and gently rub it till the colour fades away. The baking soda has an abrasive effect, so be sure not to over-scrub. It helps by removing the dyes skin cells and the detergent works by lifting the dye off. Be sure to not use this mixture if irritation occurs or near the eyes. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Toothpaste

Use a dot of toothpaste on the dyed skin and spread it to cover all the coloured area. It is a mild abrasive and can work by scraping the stained skin cells and revealing clean skin underneath. Any toothpaste can be used, but one with baking soda works best, since it has larger granules which are better for the scraping action. Rinse with water.

Rubbing alcohol and soap

Soak a cotton ball in some rubbing alcohol and gently wipe the stained area with it. Once you see the colour fading, you can apply soap and rinse the area with water. If you do not have rubbing alcohol, you could also use men’s aftershave lotion! This has a mild alcohol content which works just the same. Rinse with water later.
