Could Supplements Make You Younger-Looking Than Creams?

When you think of anti-ageing treatments, you undoubtedly think of all kinds of lotions and potions that can be applied topically to the face, to restore the wellness of the skin. What is gradually emerging, though, is an increased trend towards people looking after the wellbeing of their ageing skin by taking supplements.

Research increasingly shows that the key to keeping wrinkles at bay could be found in a supplement rather than in any kind of face cream. This area of health is called nutraceuticals, which means dietary supplements designed to help improve beauty.

Unlike traditional supplements, these are not sold exclusively in health-food stores in clinical-looking bottles, but instead are sold in attractive and commercial packaging, which can take pride of place in your bathroom. These are available in stores such as Liberty and Selfridges.

Some skincare companies such as Nurture, Healthspan, Yllume and Caudalie now also offer these supplements alongside their face creams, in an attempt to offer a holistic approach to anti-ageing, supporting the health and maintenance of skin from the outside as well as the inside.

One of the biggest selling points of brands is their claims to help naturally boost protein collagen in the skin, producing a more structured and firm skin tone. This is important because your natural collagen levels start to fall when you are in your mid-30s, and by the time you reach the age of 55 it can have fallen by as much as 40 percent. This lack of collagen can lead the skin to sag and wrinkle, which is highly ageing.

Whilst some supplements aim to prompt the body to make more collagen, others focus on increasing the body’s antioxidants, such as astaxanthin and lycopene, as well as resveratrol, which help to fight free radicals in the body and protect the skin from the damaging effects of these, and of ultraviolet light.
