Olympia, 95, had been suffering from pneumonia and was admitted to hospice care when she refused to eat. She passed away Sunday, February 2. around 4:30 a.m.

“I think she was dying of a broken heart, but I also think she wanted to pass first so he wouldn’t have to enter heaven without her there to welcome him,” said her granddaughter AnnMarie McDonald.

“And when my grandmother made up her mind to do something, she did it. She did this as a testament to their love.”

Michael, 94, had been hospitalized for stage IV colon cancer, which he had been battling for four years. His family decided not to tell him about his wife’s death, but “It was bizarre,” says McDonald.

“I think instinctually he knew she had died.” He passed away at 12:32 p.m. Monday.
