Are You Doing Enough to Help Prevent Lung Cancer?

Last month was National Cancer Prevention Month, and for many, cancer is one of the biggest health concerns that face them. As part of National Cancer Prevention Month, many health organisations release some tips and tricks to help people safeguard their wellness and wellbeing against the disease.

This is particularly important when it comes to lung cancer. If you ask anyone what they can do to help prevent lung cancer, the answer will be ‘don’t smoke’. Whilst it is very important to consider the risks of smoking and lung cancer, there are also other factors to consider. It’s very important to bear in mind that lung cancer is the sixth leading cause of death in those who have never smoked.

Therefore, there are other things that you can do to help prevent lung cancer as well as staying away from cigarette smoking.

Firstly, check out your home for exposure to radon. Radon within the home is the second leading cause of lung cancer amongst smokers and the leading cause in those who do not smoke. Radon is a colourless and odourless gas which results from the natural decay of the uranium present in the soil beneath your home. The only way to find out if you are at risk from radon is to have your home tested. You can find radon kits in almost all hardware stores for $20 or less.

You should also stay away from second hand smoke. Passive smoking is responsible for around 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year. You should also take the time to learn about any chemicals that you are exposed to in your workplace, as well as ways to protect yourself from them. It is thought that between 13 and 29 percent of lung cancers in all men are related to exposure to chemicals and other substances through work.
