Five Unexpected Places Diseases Are Commonly Spread

It is common knowledge that places with a lot of sick people, such as hospitals, are hotbeds for contagious diseases. However, there are many other places where diseases are often spread, and can be avoided. Here are some of the worst offenders.

Grocery Stores
When shopping for groceries, make sure you don’t come home with a foodborne illness! At the grocery store, look for the freshest food that is available. Fresh food is less likely to be contaminated with harmful bacteria which can cause food poisoning. Do not purchase dented canned goods, or frozen food with damaged packaging. Beware the grocerey carts as well and always use hand sanitizer after touching them.

Restaurant Salad Bars
Wherever there is food, there is the potential for food poisoning. The raw ingredients found in restaurant salad bars provide a perfect medium for bacteria to grow. Also, dirty hands touching salad bar items can spread contagious diseases. When you’re at a restaurant, it’s best to avoid the salad bar. Order a freshly made salad from the menu instead.

The Workplace
In offices, many people share computers. Computer keyboards and mice harbor many types of bacteria and viruses, and outbreaks of norovirus have been traced to shared computers. Wash your hands after touching a communal computer. Computer keyboards and mice should be disinfected frequently.

Gyms
You go to the gym to improve your health, but did you know that the gym is a perfect place to catch a skin disease? To avoid picking up a skin disease, such as athlete’s foot, or a staph infection, wash your hands after using the gym’s equipment. Shower and change into clean clothes after your workout, and don’t share soap, razors, or towels.

Your Home
After hearing about so many places where you can catch diseases, you might think that your home is a safe haven. Unfortunately, unwanted intruders can bring diseases into your house. Mice, for example, are not just a nuisance. Some mice carry hantavirus, a rare but often deadly disease. To prevent mice from entering your house, seal any gaps in the walls where rodents could get through. Food in your cupboards should be stored in rodent-proof containers. If mice have already entered your house, you can set out traps for them. If that doesn’t solve the problem, consider hiring an exterminator. In addition  to rodents, other pests can be a real problem and source of spreading diseases. You might think bed bugs are a think of the past, but if you aren’t vigilant in cleaning sheets at least once a week, and regularly cleaning mattresses, you might be calling a Houston bed bug control service.

With so many places to pick up diseases, it’s easy to get sick. But if you know how and where some common diseases occur, you can take steps to reduce your risk of catching them.
