Could it be that winter has finally let go its grip from around spring’s neck? I certainly hope so.
With spring officially starting nearly two weeks ago, it sure hasn’t seemed much like it to me.
Well, Monday, I believe things started to change and I hope for the good.
When Major League Baseball begins its season, there’s no guarantee that it’s going to warm and sunny. We’ve all seen or even been to an Opening Day in Baltimore when the temperatures weren’t so high and the skies not too sunny. In fact, we’ve seen it snow a few times.
So, Monday’s big game in Baltimore didn’t have either of those from what I could tell from the TV sets in the office and at home. And best yet, the Orioles win.
Win they do on an Nelson Cruz solo home run late in the game.
This is the first year in a long time that I have not had a fantasy baseball team. It was a long time ago that I played for more than just fun and bragging rights with friends and co-workers, but this year I just didn’t get the urge.
That said, I’m still interested in stats for certain players. Mostly players from the team I like, Kansas City, or like Cruz himself, a player I had on my fantasy roster the last couple years.
I also will watch closely this year the progress of St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong. For those of you who have been around here for the past dozen years, that name might seem a bit familiar. It should.
Wong was a player on Hawaii’s Cal Ripken World Series team that played in Aberdeen in 2003, the first year the series was played here in Harford County.
Wong is the first player from the Cal Ripken World Series to reach, play and start in the major leagues. Wong made the start Monday and went 1-for-3 with a single in the Cardinals 1-0 win.
It wasn’t until a little later Monday though, that I had the real feeling that spring is really sprung. After an abbreviated walk, I walked into the Home Depot to look for a few items. All had to do with spring.
I needed the Weed and Feed for grass, bug spray for the perimeter and Liquid Fence to protect certain plants from our wild friends, the deer.
But, it was while walking through the store that it really hit me. All the grills, mowers, flowers just say nicer days are ahead.
Now, just as I said that, it will rain Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But it’s not snow.
We can’t afford to have multiple days of rain each week. Amazingly, a couple baseball games were played Monday that were not in Major League parks. Kudos to those who made the fields ready for play.
Been there and done that. It’s gratifying, especially if you win.
