Cycling enthusiasts young and old descended on the Forum in Norwich today with their bikes to take part in a number of events taking place as part of the Norfolk Cycle Show.
The event, which started at 10am, included a big charity ride in aid of Norfolk disability charity Nansa, electric bike test track, bling my bike competition, bike fixing courses, gymnastics unicycles, and dance groups.
Andy Verney, 49, from Cringleford, who attended the event with his son Cameron, 11, said he was particularly interested in hearing what Mr Obree – who twice broke the world hour record and who is a two time individual pursuit world champion – had to say.
He said: “He’s an inspirational character in terms of leaving school with no qualifications and setting himself enormous challenges and overcoming them.”
Kevin Sullivan, 49, from Weeting, who attended the show with his children Ben, nine, Hannah, eight, and Joanne, six, said there was a “fantastic turnout” for the event.
Neil Turner, proprietor of Pedal Revolution, who thought there were more than 5,000 people at the event throughout the day, said it was great to see so many people “on bikes and chatting about bikes”.
He said there would be another chance for cycling fans to get together next week at Strumpshaw for the Strumppy splash and dash which takes place on April 13.
