A man who police say is a member of the Crips street gang has been charged with running over a city police bicycle officer while driving a Chattanooga Volkswagen vehicle.
Timothy Dewayne Shropshire, 21, of 4310 Righton Lane, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, evading arrest, running a red light, disobedience to a police directive, failure to exercise due care while driving, and resisting a stop and frisk.
Shropshire was out on bond at the time on charges of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, use of a firearm during a dangerous felony, carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of marijuana.
The bike incident happened April 5 and Shropshire was arrested on Wednesday.
Bike Patrol Officer Bobby Moses said he was at MLK Boulevard and Georgia Avenue when he saw the driver of a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta run a red light.
He said when the VW got stopped in traffic, he rode up alongside the vehicle and asked him to turn his car off. The officer said at the same time he saw what appeared to be an open container of alcohol in a brown paper sack in the front console.
The officer said Shropshire looked at his passenger and then back at him, then he swerved the car into his bicycle. The impact caused the officer to stumble. Then Shropshire began to drive away, dragging the officer for a short distance.
The tag came back to the Chattanooga Volkswagen plant. A human resources supervisor said the vehicle was leased to Emery King, but the primary driver was his step-son, Timothy Shropshire.
Shropshire had been set to appear Tuesday before Criminal Court Judge Rebecca Stern on the attempted-murder charge. In that case, police said Shropshire began firing a silver handgun at a man who had his twin daughters with him. The man was hit in the right tricep.
Police said Shropshire had with him his step-son, Deutrich James, who had been kicked out of the home of the shooting victim the day before.
