How can I get started with Yoga?

Starting a yoga practice can be a bit daunting, if only because there is so much choice available!  The ancient system of yoga has grown into countless modern interpretations, all combining the physical and the spiritual to differing extents.  How do you navigate all the different styles and avoid ending up in a ‘power yoga’ class on your very first session?!

Start by doing some research on the different types of yoga.  Some styles are very physically demanding and should be avoided on your first try!  For example, Kundalini and Ashtanga styles are not the best for beginners unless you are already very fit.  It is best to opt for Hatha Yoga classes at first, as you can expect a slower pace of exercise.

The most important thing is to find a good instructor.  You should try a few different yoga schools if possible, in order to find a person you trust.  They will provide physical and emotional support as you make your first attempts.  Your teacher should guide you in and out of the postures, and make adjustments as necessary.  Make sure you inform them of any physical ailments you have, so they can guide you safely.

When starting out in yoga, a low-cost option is that of instructional videos.  You can pick up a cheap yoga DVD in many high street shops.  Or, why not check out the internet for video examples of all the different yoga styles?  That way you’ll know exactly what you’re in for at your first class!

Your interest in yoga is an important first step on the road to wellbeing.  Few other complementary therapies can compare to the effects produced by yoga.  Start by researching the topic and finding a class where you feel comfortable.  Soon you will be well on the way to a state of physical and emotional wellness.
