What to Expect from your One Year Old
In the year since birth babies change a great deal. They’ll have grown physically and mentally and will be getting smarter all the time. This level of development will continue well past their second years and can be more than a little astounding to parents, for whom the time will whizz by. These are some of the areas and factors to look for in your child’s development; if you’re worried about anything to do with your child’s development then it’s important to talk to your doctor ASAP as nothing’s more important than their health and wellbeing.
The Physical
In their first year it’s common for a baby to as much as triple in weight. Generally a one year old baby will weigh between 17 and 30 pounds and measure between 27 and 35 inches tall. At one year old your child should still look very much like a baby with the rounded abdomen and baby fat along with shorter arms and legs and a soft face. In their second year babies will start to get more mobile and this exercise will burn off a lot of the excess puppy fat and build up muscles.
The Mental
At age one it’s common for your child to speak and understand several words, generally including mama or dad. They’ll point at objects and wave goodbye as well as playing simplistic games with you. Baby’s babble which sounds a lot like speech and is in fact the beginnings of its development, sometimes they’ll throw a few of the words they know into this babble which can make it sound like a dialogue. Your baby will also be able to follow instructions, provided they’re not too complex!
The Psychological
At age one your child should recognise individuals and show attachments to members of the family, especially you. It’s common for them to drop objects from their highchairs and show excitement when around other children.
