An asthmatic’s guide to exercising and keeping fit
It’s a new year and this year we’re all going to stick to our resolutions, right? Well, probably not but we’re going to spend a few months struggling through them and doing our best. We at Yourwellness are here to help you feel better in general and if your resolutions were to do with losing weight or getting fit and healthy and you happen to be asthmatic we’ve got a treat for you.
It can be extra hard to stick to those resolutions if you’re asthmatic as you might actually feel worse for them by triggering your conditions in ways you didn’t realise you could. It’s a tricky disorder to manage if you’re putting yourself into situations you may not be used to, allergens can hide anywhere and they’re very rarely obvious things!
– Don’t overdo it! And if you’re going to anyway and you start to suffer from shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing you could well be suffering from exercise induced bronchoconstriction. Don’t worry too much about this, you can treat it by using your inhaler before you start exercising!
– Just because it looks healthy doesn’t mean it is for you. There are a lot of health foods which are loaded with potential allergens, remember to read ingredients labels before you eat anything to make sure that what you’re eating is as good for you as it’s claiming to be!
– Equipment. Try and avoid rubber or latex exercise equipment, especially if you know you’re allergic to these things. Coming into contact with them will cause you discomfort and could well provoke an allergic reaction!
– If, like me, you’re allergic to pollen then exercise indoors. If you get bored of this then remember to take your antihistamine before you get out there! There’s nothing worse than starting our great and having to turn back due to a sneezing attack or burning eyes!
