Three Terps bring home ACC women’s lacrosse awards

The ACC announced Terrapins women’s lacrosse coach Cathy Reese as the Coach of the Year, defender Megan Douty as Defensive Player of the Year and midfielder Zoe Stukenberg as the Co-Freshman of the Year in a press release Monday.

The Terps represented three of the five awards handed out by conference officials. Syracuse attacker Kayla Treanor won Offensive Player of the Year, and North Carolina attacker Sydney Holman joined Stukenberg as Co-Freshman of the Year.

It was the sixth consecutive time the ACC named Reese coach of the year and the seventh time overall — a league record. Reese, who is in her eighth season helming the Terps, also won the IWLCA National Coach of the Year award in 2010.

Reese led the Terps to a 19-1 record and their sixth consecutive ACC title this season. The Terps also earned the No. 1-seed in the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season.

On defense, Douty led a Terps team that limited opponents to an average of eight goals per game, which ranks No. 11 in the nation. The Fair Haven, N.J., native frequently defended the opponents’ top scoring threat and caused 16 turnovers on the season while picking up 27 ground balls.

For the second straight season, a Terps newcomer won Freshman of the Year after midfielder Taylor Cummings won the award last season. Stukenberg finished fifth on the Terps with 32 goals and nine assists.
