32nd Sheriff’s Rodeo set for weekend
The rodeo begins at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena near the intersection of Alabama 99 and Market Street. Gates will open at 6 nightly.
Adult admission is $15 the day of the event or $10 in advance. Admission for ages 12 and under is $10 at the gate or $8 in advance.
Athens ticket outlets are the Sheriff’s Office, both Jiffy’s locations, West End Chevron, Adams Western Wear, Railroad Bazaar and Preston’s Western Wear. True Discount in Ardmore, Tennessee, and Warren’s BP in Rogersville also are selling advance tickets.
The event known as the biggest outdoor rodeo east of the Mississippi River has been renamed to Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events in the region.
Organizers said Tuesday’s annual Rodeo Street Dance and Fashion Show drew several hundred people to downtown Athens.
A rodeo preview known as Slack, which showcases competitive rodeo events without the entertainment acts, is at 9 a.m. Thursday at the arena.
Many elementary students will attend the event for free as a reward for completing incentive programs. Gates open at 8 a.m. and public admission is $5.
The annual Special Needs Rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday for 450 students with disabilities. The students will participate in horseback rides, petting zoos, buggy rides, train rides and pin the star on the sheriff, among other activities.
Rodeo lineup
The rodeo will feature bareback bronc riding, calf roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, kids’ calf scramble, cowgirls’ barrel racing, chuck wagon races, bull riding, specialty acts and professional rodeo clowns.

• 6 p.m. — gates open; pony rides for ages 10 and under
• 7 p.m. — Kids Gold Rush
• 8 p.m. — opening ceremony and grand entry
*Miss Limestone Rodeo will be crowned Saturday night.
